THE ORIGINAL NEW TOWN BAKERY

CAMBIE STREET

CHINESE FOOD FILIPINO FOOD STEAMED BUNS BAKERY

The ORIGINAL New Town Bakery on Cambie Street! Most locals and tourists know the New Town Bakery in Vancouver’s Chinatown but this little shop has been around much longer! Since 1948!!!! The Original New Town Bakery is a small shop with no dine-in seating.

Steam Buns also known as Bao, or baozi has Chinese origins but it became very popular with Filipinos. The Filipino tagalog word for steam buns is Siopao. “Siopao was introduced to the Philippines by Ma Mon Luk, a Cantonese immigrant, in 1918.”

If you see the word Siopao being used, it’s definitely Filipino style steamed bun. Typical Siopaos are Asado (Pork), and Bola Bola (Meatball), tagalog words.

Siopaos have a nice fluffy white dough. The red dot helps identify the bao. Special or Bola Bola. Some places have a small dot but The Original New Town Bakery has a giant red circle!

Bola Bola $3.99
Huge meat ball chicken mixed with egg, and sausage.

BBQ Pork Asado $3.29
Good portion size. Lots of tender meat and flavour with not much fatty ‘filler.’

PRICE:
$ FAIR PRICE. Similar to other bakeries.

QUALITY:
GOOD! Good portion size! Fresh and hot. Lots of meat very little fatty ”filler pieces in Asado. Good flavour and doesn’t taste like over powering sauce like Chinatown New Town Bakery.

SERVICE:
GOOD! Grandma working was friendly but gets annoyed if you ask too many questions.

VERDICT:
Overall, VERY SATISFIED. The Original New Town Bakery IS the ORIGINAL! Giant siopaos with lots of fillings. For Siopao, the Original New Town Bakery is much better than New Town Bakery Chinatown and Bao Bakery!
