New Town Bakery is one of the oldest, and most popular Cantonese
Chinese cafe/restaurants in Vancouver, known for steamed buns (Bao).

New Town Bakery is located in Vancouver’s Historic Chinatown and has a long history in the city.

Chicken Mami $7.50
Light broth, with shredded chicken, soft noodles.
A simple Filipino chicken noodle soup to go along with the steamed bao.
Order this or the Wonton Noodle soup.

Steamed Bun (Chicken) $2.85
Nice soft bun, and steaming fillings.

Steamed Bun (Sticky Rice) $2.85
Nice presentation, they are served already sliced.
Delicious rice and meat fillings.

Steamed Bun (Pork) Asado $2.60
The original that everyone loves. Salty, and has pieces of fat.

Hong Kong Milk Tea $2.75
Good, but there’s better elsewhere.

PRICE:
$-$$ Affordable. Used to be cheaper back in the day.

QUALITY:
Very good quality. The best steamed buns in town.

SERVICE:
Good. Sometimes friendly, other times unfriendly and rude.
The place looks well lit, and clean.

VERDICT:
Come here for the steamed bao.
You can have steamed buns with noodles, soup, and other Cantonese dishes.
The food on the menu is also good but they are best known for the steamed bao.

Fun Fact: They also have Filipino food on the menu. Bao Bakery is also owned by New Town Bakery.

Symphonie Restaurant is a breakfast and lunch cafe  in downtown Vancouver. It is on the ground floor of an office complex facing Pender Street.

This is a unique place with Western sandwiches, Filipino, Indian and Asian dishes. Very international! The variety is very good.

KULINARYA FILIPINO EATERY COMMERCIAL DRIVE – VANCOUVER FOOD REVIEWS – GUTOM.CA

Kulinarya Filipino Eatery serves up authentic cuisine, in a hip casual setting on Commercial Drive. There are two Kulinarya locations.The original location is in Coquitlam.

Here’s what we ordered:

Lumpia – Fried pork spring roll.
Pansit – Noodle dish, beef, veggies.
Tapsilog – Beef, egg on rice platter.
Sinigang – Pork Tamarind sour soup.

Lumpia – Fried pork spring roll. 10 pieces.
Comes with sweet and sour sauce. Small portion size. The lumpia wrapper was hard not crispy.

Pansit – Noodle dish, beef, veggies.
*Pork was sold out at the time. Beef was used instead.
Good noodles, and toppings.

Tapsilog – Beef, egg on rice platter with veggies.
Nice presentation. The beef wasn’t sizzling. Was kind of tough.

Sinigang – Pork Tamarind sour soup.
Lots of ingredients, veggies. Pork pieces were a bit small. Soup was oily.
Way too sour as if cook used 10 packs of sinigang powder!

VALUE:
Expensive for the portion size and quality.

QUALITY:
Average. Could be much better.

SERVICE:
Friendly. Slow kitchen.

VERDICT
Average Filipino food, with a good atmosphere
for entertaining. Pricey.

GUTOM TRAVELS – PHILIPPINES

Mang Inasal is a barbecue fast food restaurant chain in the Philippines, best known for UNLIMITED RICE! This location is at SM City Mall in Pampanga.

What We Ordered
2-Piece Pork BBQ comes rice
Chicken BBQ with rice
Complimentary side of soup is handed out once you’re seated at your table.

This place was packed, with a line up to order. You have to wait to be seated by one of the servers, because it was so busy.

Simple meal of BBQ and rice. Pretty good for Fast-food!

Calamansi is provided. It’s like a lime. It’s used for citrus flavor.
A cross between citrus and kumquat.
Mix with soy sauce, and hot pepper for amazing flavor!

Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Patis (fish sauce) are also condiments at your table.

Overall, good fast-food BBQ. Very Filipino.

Bangus (fish) Belly and mixed veggies, squash, okra.

Pork BBQ Skewers

Kare Kare
Ox Tail and veggies peanut sauce.

Malunggay Shrimp Beancurd (Soup)
Simmered shrimp in moringa puree with beancurd.

Crispchon Lechon with pandon crepe.
Assembled at your table.
Served also in chili garlic.

Chili Garlic Lechon.
Fried banana in wrap with ice cream. YUM!

Mesa is a great Filipino food experience for the whole family! A MUST if you are in Makati!

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN AT KENNY ROGERS ROASTERS PHILIPPINES – GUTOM TRAVELS – VANCOUVER FOOD REVIEW GUTOM.CA

Kenny who?

Kenny Rogers Roasters is a chain of chicken-based restaurants. It was founded in 1991 by country musician Kenny Rogers. 

After closing all of its U.S. operations Kenny Rogers Roasters now operatesprincipally in Asia – via Wikipedia

Apparently,  Kenny Rogers Roasters is a big deal in the Philippines. The North American equivalent would be a Swiss Chalet or a Nandos.

Here’s what we ordered.

Group Meal good for 2-4 people.
– Chicken and steamed rice, and choice of side dishes.

Side Dishes included with Group Meal
– Steamed veggies (x2), mashed potatoes, fruit salad, biscuits.

Drink Jug included with Group Meal
-Iced Tea.

 The chicken is nicely seasoned, and overall the meal is filling.

Wendy’s in the Philippines is a little different from what you see in North America. Their menu features Fried Chicken and Ube (Purple Yam) Frosty!

Comes with steamed rice, and gravy. RICE!

Wendy’s fried chicken is crispy, and tasty. Good portion size, meat.

Frosty 50.00 Philippine Peso (Around $1.20 Canadian)
A regular sized Frosty would actually be a small Junior size cup in North America!

Purple Yam or Ube as it is known by Filipinos is a popular ingredient used in desserts, foods.

Frosty is topped with a ube icing.
 Tastes great!

VALUE: Very good. Dollar vs Philippine peso.

QUALITY: Good portion size, good food temperature
for fast-food. Didn’t get stomach illness!

SERVICE: Friendly, fast.

Manny’s Grill and Silog House located in Burnaby serves up Filipino cuisine with a focus on BBQ and breakfast comfort food.

 Silog are a style of dishes consumed at breakfast.

BBQ Pork Skewers $8.99 Two skewers w/ rice. Good portion and flavor! Ration of meat and fat pieces on stick varies.

Pancit Canton $9.99 Large portion of rice and egg noodles enough to feed a small group of hungry people! Contains pork.

Lumpia $6.50 10 Pieces plus sweet and sour sauce appetizer size. Tasty! Contains pork. 

Sinigang Pork Rib $9.95 Very cool presentation, lots of veggies pork pieces, and flavorful hot soup! Impressive!

Value: Good value for the whole family. Quality: Good portions! Service: Friendly. Fast, slower when busy. Cash, Debit and Credit.
