HOT STAR LARGE FRIED CHICKEN TAIWANESE SOFT OPENING – VANCOUVER FOOD GUIDE REVIEWS – GUTOM.CA

Hot-Star 豪大大雞排

NEW BUSINESS SOFT OPENING!
Hot Star Large Fried Chicken opened on May 1, 2019. Like J&G Fried Chicken, Hot Star boasts multiple international locations and hopes to capitalize on the popularity of Taiwanese street food in Vancouver.

Located at Central at Garden City outdoor mall in Richmond, BC.

This business is known for fried chicken flattened to appear like a large breaded cutlet like Japanese Chicken Katsu. They offer assorted seasoning like Salt & Pepper, Seaweed, Plum, and different levels of spice seasoning. They also have fries, popcorn chicken, cheese fried chicken, fried mushrooms, and various beverages. No Bubble Tea.

Everything on the menu is FRIED at Hot Star except for the drinks. Looks like they even have Drumsticks and Half Chicken which were unavailable at Soft Opening.

The advertising shows that you’re supposed to hold the fried chicken and bite into it like a sandwich but it’s really easier to use utensils
when filming!

The restaurant has a large space but is there enough seating?

We Ordered
Original Fried Chicken $10.99
Drink Lime Mojito $4.00 + .50 to make it a Large.
Fries: $2.50

The Original Fried Chicken came with Salt and Pepper seasoning and mild chili powder. The cutlet was hot, steaming and fresh from the fryer. It took around 10-15 minutes for it to cook. The food is served in typical street food style — paper and plastic bags. NO plates for dining in but there are forks and knifes. Expect to get greasy fingers!

Drink was served in a plastic Bubble Tea cup.
The images advertised show a glass cup.

The fries were nice and crispy and sprinkled with seaweed seasoning.
Good portion size. They provided 2 packets of ketchup.

#HairGate
We discovered a hair in the cutlet mixed in with the breading of the fried chicken. We immediately brought this to the attention of the server. They were happy to cook another original fried chicken. However the lady mentioned that if it was their hair it would have been “curly” when fried with the rest of the chicken.

The newly made Original Fried Chicken took around 10 minutes and was seasoned with Seaweed flavor.
No hair was spotted.
The seaweed flavor is not actual seaweed flakes.

TOTAL SPENT AT HOT STAR FRIED CHICKEN
Original Fried Chicken $10.99
Drink Large $4.50
Fries: $2.50
TAX $.90
TIP $2.00
TOTAL $20.89

PRICE:
$$ Over $10. Expect to spend at least $18 for their chicken, fries, and drink combo. $4.50 for a drink seemed overpriced.

QUALITY:
It’s good. Good portion size enough for 2 people.
The Fries were good, crispy and nice seasoning flavor.
The Lime Mojito was refreshing, not too sweet. About the size of bubble tea without the boba.
The chicken was tender, hot. The breading seems to fall off easily. BEWARE the chicken has bones. BAD: there was a hair.

SERVICE:
Good. Friendly. Noticeable wait to get food. They acted quickly to fix the hair situation by cooking another on the house. However unclear if they were implying that the hair came from the customer.
BAD: They have utensils but no plates for dining in.

VERDICT:
Nice take on fried chicken with a Taiwanese twist. Many missing menu items on Soft Opening but the menu looks good. Original Fried Chicken is worth trying. Large space, and lots of parking.
