All You Can Eat Fish and Chips $14.99
Comes with bottomless POP! We were told the fish in AYCE is Pollock. Fried to order. Nice golden light batter. Pieces vary in size. Nice natural cut fries. All You Can Eat!

“Atlantic pollock is largely considered to be a whitefish, although it is a fairly strongly flavored one.[citation needed] Traditionally a popular source of food in some countries, such as Norway, in the United Kingdom it has previously been largely consumed as a cheaper and versatile alternative to cod and haddock. However, in recent years, pollock has become more popular due to overfishing of cod and haddock. It can now be found in most supermarkets as fresh fillets or prepared freezer items. For example, it is used minced in fish fingers or as an ingredient in imitation crab meat, and is commonly used to make fish and chips.” – Wikipedia

Prawn Madness $1.99 for 4 pieces. Not AYCE but still delicious!

PRO TIP: ASK FOR LEMON SLICES!

Another round! Don’t be shy and order more!

HOW MANY CAN YOU EAT?

eaten! Can you beat that record?

The Fish at C-Lovers is perfectly fried and melts in your mouth. The fish and batter breaks up easily but it is still pretty good.

HOT STAR LARGE FRIED CHICKEN TAIWANESE SOFT OPENING – VANCOUVER FOOD GUIDE REVIEWS – GUTOM.CA

Hot-Star 豪大大雞排

NEW BUSINESS SOFT OPENING!
Hot Star Large Fried Chicken opened on May 1, 2019. Like J&G Fried Chicken, Hot Star boasts multiple international locations and hopes to capitalize on the popularity of Taiwanese street food in Vancouver.

Located at Central at Garden City outdoor mall in Richmond, BC.

This business is known for fried chicken flattened to appear like a large breaded cutlet like Japanese Chicken Katsu. They offer assorted seasoning like Salt & Pepper, Seaweed, Plum, and different levels of spice seasoning. They also have fries, popcorn chicken, cheese fried chicken, fried mushrooms, and various beverages. No Bubble Tea.

Everything on the menu is FRIED at Hot Star except for the drinks. Looks like they even have Drumsticks and Half Chicken which were unavailable at Soft Opening.

The advertising shows that you’re supposed to hold the fried chicken and bite into it like a sandwich but it’s really easier to use utensils
when filming!

The restaurant has a large space but is there enough seating?

We Ordered
Original Fried Chicken $10.99
Drink Lime Mojito $4.00 + .50 to make it a Large.
Fries: $2.50

The Original Fried Chicken came with Salt and Pepper seasoning and mild chili powder. The cutlet was hot, steaming and fresh from the fryer. It took around 10-15 minutes for it to cook. The food is served in typical street food style — paper and plastic bags. NO plates for dining in but there are forks and knifes. Expect to get greasy fingers!

Drink was served in a plastic Bubble Tea cup.
The images advertised show a glass cup.

The fries were nice and crispy and sprinkled with seaweed seasoning.
Good portion size. They provided 2 packets of ketchup.

#HairGate
We discovered a hair in the cutlet mixed in with the breading of the fried chicken. We immediately brought this to the attention of the server. They were happy to cook another original fried chicken. However the lady mentioned that if it was their hair it would have been “curly” when fried with the rest of the chicken.

The newly made Original Fried Chicken took around 10 minutes and was seasoned with Seaweed flavor.
No hair was spotted.
The seaweed flavor is not actual seaweed flakes.

TOTAL SPENT AT HOT STAR FRIED CHICKEN
Original Fried Chicken $10.99
Drink Large $4.50
Fries: $2.50
TAX $.90
TIP $2.00
TOTAL $20.89

PRICE:
$$ Over $10. Expect to spend at least $18 for their chicken, fries, and drink combo. $4.50 for a drink seemed overpriced.

QUALITY:
It’s good. Good portion size enough for 2 people.
The Fries were good, crispy and nice seasoning flavor.
The Lime Mojito was refreshing, not too sweet. About the size of bubble tea without the boba.
The chicken was tender, hot. The breading seems to fall off easily. BEWARE the chicken has bones. BAD: there was a hair.

SERVICE:
Good. Friendly. Noticeable wait to get food. They acted quickly to fix the hair situation by cooking another on the house. However unclear if they were implying that the hair came from the customer.
BAD: They have utensils but no plates for dining in.

VERDICT:
Nice take on fried chicken with a Taiwanese twist. Many missing menu items on Soft Opening but the menu looks good. Original Fried Chicken is worth trying. Large space, and lots of parking.

NEW FISH AND CHIPS AT MCDONALD’S CANADA – VANCOUVER FOOD GUIDE REVIEWS – GUTOM.CA

McDonald’s NEW Fish and Chips! “100% Atlantic Haddock”
It’s on the cover of the May Coupon booklet. However, inside the coupon booklet there are no coupons for the Fish and Chips! 🙁

WHAT IS HADDOCK?!
Wikipedia to the rescue!

Haddock is very popular as a food fish. It is sold fresh or preserved by smoking, freezing, drying, or to a small extent canning. Haddock, along with Atlantic cod and plaice, is one of the most popular fish used in British fish and chips.[18]

Our Order

Sausage Egg Multigrain Bagel Sandwich $4.39
Pretty good portion size, and good soft bagel.

Fish and Chips $7.19

The Main Event.

Oreo Smoothie $3
A little watery. Like a melted McFlurry.

To find the NEW Fish and Chips on the McDonald’s Self-Order kiosk choose the Filet-O-Fish Menu. The order also comes with
tartar sauce.

Fish and Chips $7.19
Two piece fish and chips. They look similar to chicken fingers
flat and breaded. No real Fish and Chip batter here.

Good tartar sauce dip really gives it the Fish and Chips flavor.
The fish itself doesn’t have a strong flavor. Only 2 pieces for $7.
Smaller than expected. The fries portion seemed small.

PRICE:
$7 bucks for two small fish pieces and small fries.

QUALITY:
It’s ok. The fish is not battered like real Fish and Chips, it’s more like chicken nuggets. The flavor isn’t like a Filet-O-Fish. Tastes less fishy than Filet-O-Fish. The fries are McDonald’s fries, nothing unique or special cut fries or wedge fries.

SERVICE:
It’s McDonald’s. Can’t order individual fish pieces.

VERDICT:
McDonald’s new Fish and Chips is an interesting idea, but it could be so much better. Basically fish sticks and regular fries. If you’re craving fish sticks this is an ok second to Filet-O-Fish. At least now you have two fish choices at McDs.

NEW INDIA BUFFET AND BAR RESTAURANT – VANCOUVER FOOD GUIDE REVIEWS – GUTOM.CA

ALL YOU CAN EAT
New India Buffet + Bar and Restaurant took over the old Earls location on
West Broadway. This restaurant boasts 70 items, giving Tandoori Flame a little competition. For foodies this means avoiding a drive to Surrey. But is New India Buffet any good?

The Lunch buffet at New India Buffet is $18.
More expensive than Agra and Saffron in Burnaby but cheaper than Tandoori Flame in Surrey.
Lots of items to choose from, and UNLIMITED chai tea!

The Tandoori Chicken at New India Buffet is different from other
similar restaurants. Even the color is different with a more orange look rather than red. The flavor of the Tandoori Chicken is more lemoney. The chicken portion size is bigger than other restaurants.

A few of their items on the buffet are Gluten Free and Vegan.

Tandoori Chicken with rice, Butter Chicken, and naan.

The Butter Chicken at New India Buffet has some mild spice to it, and seasoning. It also tastes tomatoey and looks different compared to
similar restaurants.

Papadum with green chutney, veggie samosa and veggie
spring roll.

PRICE:
$$ Not So Cheap. $20+ with tax and tip, but it is ALL YOU CAN EAT on West Broadway.

QUALITY:
Ok. Inconsistent. The rice was hard. The Tandoori Chicken was good on the first round. Second round Tandoori Chicken was dry. Buffet temperature is questionable. No buffet lids to cover food. Flies around the buffet.

SERVICE:
Bad. Only some dishes were replenished.
The fish curry was never replenished during the time we were there, even when mentioned to server.
No fish pakora in their buffet is disappointing.

VERDICT:
This is a good sized buffet for the lunch time crowd but the quality might be a hit or miss. Tandoori Flame is still the superior large Indian Buffet.
